06 Compression (continued)

Expander It has much in common with the compressor, namely a near-identical structure. The difference is in how they both work. While the compressor works with amplification equal to 1 for the signals below the threshold and with a considerably lower value for those above it, the expander is an amplifier that increases the volume of signals below the threshold while leaving those above it alone. In this case the expansion coefficients are given differently, for example 1:2, 1:5, etc. The 1:2 ratio tells us that every change of level on the entrance below the threshold level corresponding to 1dB it causes a change of level of 2dB Gate Noise gate, or just the gate, another special case of a compressor, used for muting the sounds below a certain threshold, used mainly for muting the noise or background noises at times when nothing “plays” on a track. Another difference is that in case of the gate the attack and release times are near-instantaneous and the ratio is nearly infinite because of the need to completely eliminate volume from chosen fragments. Multiband compressor Another case of the compressor, a more complex one, is the multiband compressor. The mechanics themselves are very similar to what an ordinary compressor does, but we can generate very distinct sound qualities in a more controlled way. How? With this device all the dynamics changes that the compressor does can be applied to specific frequency bands and not on the whole signals. It means that our actions can be more purposeful and we need some experience in dealing with compression and equalization in order to know what exactly we want to achieve, but after mastering the skill will allow us to be much more effective in manipulating the tracks/songs.
